Nous avons plusieurs visites au programme qui sont toutes li\u00e9es \u00e0 la capture et au stockage du carbone et aux \u00e9nergies renouvelables: une cimenterie, des mines d&rsquo;or, et une centrale g\u00e9othermale. Nous avons aussi rencontr\u00e9 les gens du Bureau of Land Management (BLM &#8211; bureau de la gestion des terres). Nous cherchons \u00e0 comprendre la faisabilit\u00e9 de plusieurs strat\u00e9gies de gestion du carbone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Le d\u00e9veloppement des \u00e9nergies renouvelables (solaire, \u00e9olien, g\u00e9othermie) pour remplacer les centrales qui utilisent des \u00e9nergies fossiles et pour augmenter la production d&rsquo;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Une solution de remplacement des \u00e9nergies fossiles est souvent l&rsquo;\u00e9lectrification, par exemples dans les transport avec les v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques. Les projections de demande d&rsquo;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 pour les prochaines ann\u00e9es sont donc \u00e0 la hausse.<\/li><li>La capture des \u00e9missions de carbone sur des sites d&rsquo;industrie lourde (comme les cimenteries) pour \u00e9viter que ce carbone soit rejet\u00e9 dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re.<\/li><li>La capture des \u00e9missions de carbone directement depuis l&rsquo;air (direct air capture &#8211; DAC) pour capturer les \u00e9missions pass\u00e9es et les \u00e9missions qui sont difficile \u00e0 r\u00e9duire autrement. Ces syst\u00e8mes ont besoin de chaleur pour leur fonctionnement. La g\u00e9othermie fournissant directement de la chaleur en provenance du sous-sol, cette source d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie est particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ressante pour les syst\u00e8mes de DAC.<\/li><li>Le stockage du carbon par min\u00e9ralisation du carbone en faisant r\u00e9agir le CO2 avec des d\u00e9chets industriel ou miniers et former des carbonates qui pourraient \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es dans des mat\u00e9riaux de construction ou dans l&rsquo;industrie du papier.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour explorer ces options, nous avons visit\u00e9 plusieurs sites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>La cimenterie du Nevada (il n&rsquo;y en a qu&rsquo;une): le carbone pourrait y \u00eatre captur\u00e9 au niveau de la chemin\u00e9e principale et la poussi\u00e8re de ciment pourrait \u00eatre utilis\u00e9e pour la min\u00e9ralisation du carbone;<\/li><li>Une centrale g\u00e9othermale: l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie thermique pourrait \u00eatre utilis\u00e9e pour des syst\u00e8mes DAC;<\/li><li>Des mines d&rsquo;or: les d\u00e9chets miniers pourraient \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es pour la min\u00e9ralisation du carbone.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces visites nous ont aussi amen\u00e9s \u00e0 d\u00e9couvrir le Nord-ouest du Nevada: l&rsquo;ancienne ville mini\u00e8re de Virginia City, les alentours de Winnemucca, et le lac Tahoe. Voici quelques photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Virginia City<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il y a 150 ans, Virginia City \u00e9tait une ville en \u00e9bullition avec de nombreux chercheurs d&rsquo;or. Plusieurs puits d&rsquo;exploration sont encore visibles et de nombreuses galeries ont \u00e9t\u00e9 creus\u00e9es dans les collines autour de la ville. L&rsquo;extraction de l&rsquo;or n\u00e9cessitait l&rsquo;utilisation de mercure et de cyanure et les collines environnantes sont toujours contamin\u00e9es. Les mines d&rsquo;or sont actuellement toutes ferm\u00e9es et l&rsquo;entreprise Comstock a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 un processus pour s\u00e9parer le mercure des anciens d\u00e9chets miniers et ainsi r\u00e9duire les niveaux de pollution. Chercheur d&rsquo;or infructueux, il devient reporter en 1862 pour le Territorial Enterprise \u00e0 Virginia City o\u00f9 son talent pour l&rsquo;\u00e9criture est remarqu\u00e9. Il va ensuite travailler pour un journal en Californie et son travaille journalistique l&rsquo;am\u00e8ne \u00e0 voyager dans le monde entier. \u00e0 Las Vegas (tout au Sud de l&rsquo;\u00e9tat) et \u00e0 Reno (au Nord-ouest de l&rsquo;\u00e9tat). Dans le reste du Nevada, il est possible de rouler sur des dizaines voire des centaines de kilom\u00e8tres sans voir une habitation ni croiser personne. L&rsquo;autoroute I-80 traverse le Nord du Nevada d&rsquo;Est en Ouest et quelques gros bourgs en jalonnent le parcours. L&rsquo;un des plus important, Winnemucca, compte 7750 habitants. Souvent le plus gros employeur est la mine la plus proche. Nous sommes toujours dans la province du Basin and Range avec des chaines de montages orient\u00e9es Nord-Sud. La veille nous avons mang\u00e9 dans un restaurant basque \u00ab\u00a0The Martins\u00a0\u00bb. Les basques ont immigr\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9gion au XIXe si\u00e8cle, d&rsquo;une part pour fuir les guerres au Pays Basque et aussi pour chercher de l&rsquo;or. Ils se sont rapidement tourn\u00e9s vers l&rsquo;\u00e9levage, puisque vendre de la viande aux mineurs rapportait plus que d&rsquo;\u00eatre mineur soi-m\u00eame. Aujourd&rsquo;hui, la majorit\u00e9 des propri\u00e9taires terriens autours de Winnemucca sont des descendants d&rsquo;immigrants basques. Nous faisons un premier arr\u00eat \u00e0 Tahoe City, puis une petite randonn\u00e9e \u00e0 Eagle Rock, un arr\u00eat \u00e0 Emerald Bay State Park et on termine la journ\u00e9e au Sunnyside
