Ce canal de 584 km traverse donc presque tout l&rsquo;\u00e9tat de New York d&rsquo;Est en Ouest et permet de relier les Grands Lacs \u00e0 New York City par voie fluviale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"http:\/\/helene.lecairn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_7059-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helene.lecairn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_7059-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/helene.lecairn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_7059-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helene.lecairn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_7059-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le canal a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit de 1817 \u00e0 1825. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, les voies de chemin de fer n&rsquo;avaient pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 construites et le transport de marchandises se faisait par portage. Le canal facilita beaucoup la circulation de marchandises entre l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des terres et New York City qui devint beaucoup moins cher et plus rapide, et favorisa l&rsquo;intallation de nouveaux colons dans la partie Ouest de l&rsquo;\u00e9tat de New York et le d\u00e9veloppement industriel de la r\u00e9gion. L&rsquo;ann\u00e9e pendant laquelle la circulation sur le canal a \u00e9t\u00e9 la plus importante est l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e 1855 avec 33,000 bateaux de marchandises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le canal \u00c9ri\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 remplac\u00e9 par le New York State Barge Canal au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle.
