Cet \u00e9tat de 32,000 km<sup>2<\/sup> est peupl\u00e9 par 6 millions d&rsquo;habitants. Avant l&rsquo;arriv\u00e9e des colons, il \u00e9tait peupl\u00e9 majoritairement par les Algonquins, et aussi par des Iroquois et des Sioux. Le Maryland est l&rsquo;une des 13 colonies fond\u00e9es par le Royaume-Uni vers le milieu du XVII<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Contrairement aux autres colonies qui \u00e9taient constitu\u00e9es de protestants, le Maryland accueillait les catholiques. Son \u00e9conomie \u00e9tant bas\u00e9e sur la culture du tabac, l&rsquo;esclavage est une pratique courante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le Maryland participe \u00e0 la r\u00e9volution am\u00e9ricaine qui chasse l&rsquo;arm\u00e9e anglaise des colonies, et signe la d\u00e9claration d&rsquo;ind\u00e9pendance en 1776. En 1790, l&rsquo;\u00e9tat c\u00e8de une partie de son territoire pour cr\u00e9er le district de Columbia qui abritera la future capitale f\u00e9d\u00e9rale.
